His full name, Idel Torriente Leal, is recognizable to say the least in the amateur boxing circuit.  Idel compiled an impressive 358-35 record and won the Cuban National Championships in 2002, 2007, and 2008, and placed second in 2006 after losing to Guillermo Rigondeaux in the finals. He won a gold medal at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2007.  In 2008, he qualified for the Olympics in Beijing, where he placed 5th in the featherweight division and earned a gold medal at the Boxing World Cup in Russia later that year. In 2009, he moved up to LW at the World Amateur Boxing Championships, where he advanced to the quarterfinals and lost to gold medalist Domenico Valentino. Idel also won gold medals at the European Grand-Pre Boxing Tournament in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
